FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q) I've never danced before/havent danced in years/am really uncoordinated! -- will the classes be too hard? Will I look like a complete idiot/will everyone be looking & laughing at my poor attempts to dance?
A) All classes marked "open", "beginners" or "all welcome" are completely pressure-free. The classes are run in a fun friendly environment, and we endeavour to keep them clear of mid-riff tops & people stretching with their legs behind their head!  Also, if you start at the beginning of a course, you're more likely to be enrolling with other absolute beginners.  Everyone progresses together through the course & everyone is likely to be just as nervous as you. So come along, have fun, push your fears aside & you'll be loving it in no time. Trust us!
Q) What do I wear to a dance class? I don't have any dance shoes.
A) Anything you feel comfortable dancing in - trackpants, sneakers, loose fitting clothing. In some classes people bring a change of shoes (ie. burlesque students sometimes wear/bring heels to change into) but it's completely up to you.  There is no "set" uniform, and we want you to be comfortable.

Q) Can I come and trial a Vibe One class without having to pay for a full course?
A) Day or night classes run through the University Recreation Programme (starting August 2010) are not run on a trial basis.

However, our other Vibe One classes run throughout the year at other venues will have a special trial class that you can sample before you commit.  That way, there's no pressure to join or come back ever again if you thought it was mortifyingly embarrassing/too hard/unenjoyable/intimidating/not right for you.  We'll give you the choice to pay the balance off for the rest of the course if you wish to carry on. Which of course you will, because the classes are great ;)
Q) Do I need to bring a partner to the DUETS class?
A) No, you can just show up on your own. No pressure to bring a partner.  We will need to confirm that there are enough guys enrolled to be feasible, but once that has been decided, the classes will run regardless of the girl guy ratio.  Both guys and girls will learn the routines/choreographies mutually exclusively of each other (ie able to do as much of the choreography without their partners ) so as to teach you hold your own, individually as well as in partners.  (NB: Guys - this is a great way to meet girls. Most males have obviously not discovered the secret - hence the 3:1 girl:guy ratio!;)

Q) How do I buy tickets to your show?
A) New shows will be announced later this year. Watch this space on how to order :)
Q) How do I pay for the University Rec Programme classes and other Vibe One course/class?
A) Courses run through the University Rec Programme (all courses starting Aug 2010) can be paid for on Level 2 of the Rec Centre over the next 2weeks (17 Symonds St, City), or at the reception desk.  Ask reception for more details  Eftpos is available.

All other Vibe One Classes that are not run through the University Rec Programme are cash or net banking only.  All account details are on Facebook (search us vibeone.dance@gmail.com) & payment must be recieved and processed at least 48hours before class begins to confirm your place in class. All courses are non-refundable & booking/registration is essential.

Q) I'm not a beginner, but I'm not a professional dancer either. I've done a few courses here & there/done a couple of courses with a Vibe One instructor already. What class should I join?
A) Since none of our classes are formulated for pro dancers, anything above open/beginner is applicable to you (& even if you want to work on your style, the open classes are good as you can perfect your technique on the choreographies). Even if you've done a couple of beginners classes & you feel like a challenge.  There is always the option of doing a one off trial class to see if you're up to the interm/adv/performance courses.  We recommend sticking to the open/beginners classes for 8 wks min (at least 1 session/wk)  before venturing into the other classes.  The intermediate classes do move at a faster pace, and the 'moves' that are taught in class are often ones that have been taught in more depth already in open/beg. To make it easier for you, it's best to take a whole beginners course before you do anything else...
Q) Can I come and watch a class?
A) Sure. You'll just have to let us know you're coming via fb/email though, preferably 24hours in advance so we can let the instructor know. Generally there's not a lot of room to watch & you might get stood on if the class is quite full, so, if you're up for it, watch the first 5mins & bring cash with you in case you want to join up ;)

Q) Can I film the classes and take it home to practise?
A) Sorry, no filming is allowed in any class, unless you have expressed permission from us prior. This includes camera phones, iphones, digital cams - strictly no filming allowed.  All choreographies are copyrighted and property of Vibe One Dance.
Q) What happens if I'm too scared to come to class - can I do a PRIVATE LESSON with a Vibe One instructor before hand so that I know what I'm getting myself in for?
A) Absolutely. Book with us and we'll prepare you so that you'll come in guns-a-blazing.  Adidas tracksuit & Nike high tops not included ;)

Q) What is "BURLESQUE"/"neo-burlesque"/"pussycatdolls"? Is it stripping? Are there poles??
A) Burlesque (aka PussyCatDolls) is a fun, friendly, sexy class, inspired by music videos by current female artists such as Beyonce, Britney Spears, The Pussycatdolls etc.  The classes are designed to get you fit and toned & build confidence in yourself - we aim to have you feeling sexier when you walk out of the door when you walk in. It's based around some of the feminine, sultry dance moves found in The Pussycatdolls videos, & from vids by Britney or Beyonce (and the music we use is similar also). It is NOT stripping, there are no poles & you can wear the $7 trackpants and jandals with socks that you keep for wearing around the house if you like.  No pressure, just a fun class for anyone who wants to learn to dance (and who wants something easier/more feminine/less aggressive than hiphop).
Q) What is "DUETS"?
A) Vibe One "Duets" was inspired by the final dance in the movie "Step Up" -- we wanted to provide an environment where we fused the partner dynamic from couple dancing, with the sexiness from burlesque & the attitude of artists like Justin Timberlake, without going more formal dancing styles like Ballroom, Ceroc & Salsa (using recognisable music tracks in the pop/RnB charts).  See the dance breakdown in the "Naughty Girl" video by Beyonce for an example or what you could work up to.  We do basic dips & spins, with some lifts if the class is up to it, and work to the class median (starting off nice & slow at the beginning of the course & progressing from there) so dont worry about getting in over your head! It's a lot of fun, and a challenge if you've never worked with a partner before, but everyone is in it for the same reason (to challenge themselves/try something new/meet people/learn to work with others). Come along to give it a try, or come & watch an example of it in our end of year show-- you'll end up loving it.

Q) I want to do "DUETS" but my boyfriend/girlfriend/partner is too scared/stubborn/refuses to come with me? What should I do?
A) Just come along anyway.  Your partner can stay at home watching TV & have dinner waiting for you when you get home! ;) When they see how enthused you are about class, they might start to get curious & even want to join.  The best way if you really want them to come along, is to convince/bribe them to come to the first class with you by offering to cook or do the dishes for a few weeks. If they're still uncomfortable after an hour or two then it's best not to pressure them & to continue along on your own. Either way, you'll become a better dancer & meet some great people, & its a great thing to do for yourself while your partner has some "me" time.
Q) Where are you dance classes held?
A) All Vibe One Dance Classes are held in Auckland, New Zealand at the University Recreation Centre Dance Studio on Symonds Street, Auckland Central. Click here to check out our 2010 timetable & our FAQ Page here. Click here for location details.
Q) What do we wear to a HENS NIGHTS? Should I wear gym gear to dance in?
A) There is no need to wear anything special to a Hens party - as long as you can dance in it that is fine. Most hens parties learn to dance in heels, so if you're going to wear heels, make sure they wont come off the foot easily.  Boots are ideal. Clothing shouldn't be too restrictive to allow for simple dance moves (dont worry, you wont be asked to do any high kicks at the Hens Party lessons!) & most Hens nights are themed to suit the burlesque lesson. It's completely up to you!
Q) I want to do an intermediate/advanced/PERFORMANCE COURSE, but I dont want to actually perform. Is this okay?
A) All classes are run for you, the student. The levels are there to challenge you, or to keep you at a comfortable pace, depending on what level you choose to learn at.  All performances are optional, but the intermediate/adv/performance courses are there to challenge you specifically. You can work up to performance level (if you've previously been a beginner/intermediate), or you can just get yourself to a level you feel is the right one for you. Either way, tell the instructor when you get to class whether performing is where you'd like to go.  They will give you the option anyway, and who knows, you may decide throughout the course that you're ready! It's entirely up to you :)
Q) How do I register for a course?
A) Facebook or email us your name, age, mobile number, level of dance experience, class your interested in/want to enrol in, what you'd like to achieve & preferred method of payment. We'll let you know the best option for you & put you in the best class suitable, if they're available at that time. Just like that.
Q) I'd like to be in a SHOW but I'm scared I wont be good enough. What should I do?
A) Everyone has the chance to work their way towards a show and you can do so by starting at the beginners/open level and working your way up, learning techniques and basic skills to give you a strong foundation for performance later on.  Your confidence will grow as you practise and learn week to week, and after 8 to 16 weeks (attending class once a week), we guarantee you'll be a better dancer and feel a lot more confident in your dance/learning ability. Once you feel confident enough, your instructors will take you through the steps at how to perform - and if you're willing to work and rehearse then there'll be no stopping you!  That said, if you want to just do one course and perform, let your instructor know, or contact us for the best course for you (it will depend on your prior dance experience)..either way, we'd love to see you up on stage!
